NAME: John “Fred” Schmall AGE: 78 RESIDENT OF: Visalia DATE OF DEATH: 12-18-2015 OCCUPATION: Teacher PLACE OF DEATH: Visalia It is with great sadness that we announce that Fred Schmall Jr lost his many year battle with cancer on December 18, 2015 at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife Helen, sister Marianne, two children Glenn and Cathy, two grandchildren Aerin and Erik and his horse Lilly. Born into a farming family, agriculture and animals were in his blood and along with classical music became life-long passions. He grew up on the family fruit ranch in tiny Parlier, CA where he was active in many extra-curricular clubs in school, especially band where he learned to play the clarinet. He attended and graduated from both Reedly College and UC Davis with a degree in Agriculture and became a high school Ag teacher and FFA advisor, eventually settling in Visalia, CA with his wife and starting his family. His teaching career lasted nearly 4 decades as he eventually taught multiple subjects at all 3 area high schools and spanned at least two generations of his students. His love of playing the clarinet never faded and he was an active member of the Kings County Symphony for years playing in various yearly concerts and even traveling with the group on multiple over-seas tours which he greatly enjoyed. Raising and showing purebred rabbits with his wife was another of Fred's favorite hobbies. He was very active in their local rabbit club and traveled all over the state showing their rabbits and winning awards. An avid horseman ever since the age of 7 when he was given his first horse, it seems there has never really been a time in his life when he did not own and ride one. He had many happy times and made many great friends trail riding horses in the mountains especially in the Sequoia and Kings Canyon national park and forest regions. Teaching was more than just an occupation for Fred. Always an educator he always enjoyed sharing his knowledge and expertise with others. From knot tying clinics and being a trail boss with his horse riding group to donating his time being a 4-H and FFA rabbit project leader to helping people new to raising and showing rabbits he never minded taking time with you to be sure you were well set on your way. Please join his friends and family in a celebration of his life Jan 9th at 1pm at Salser and Dillard funeral chapel in Visalia.
