Roy Evert Haynes

Roy was born the third of seven children in Ava, Missouri to Nora Bell Haynes Shafer and Lewis Clifford Haynes. He lost his father at age eight and was a favorite of his mother, helping her to raise his younger siblings. After Roy attended primary school in a one-room schoolhouse, the family moved to Corcoran where he graduated from Corcoran High School. Roy joined the Air Force with his brother and served 4 years in Japan. He returned to California and graduated from Cal State LA in English while working as a reporter for the LA Times where he won a Pulitzer Prize for articles on the Black Panthers. He also wrote free lance articles for Life magazine. In 1972 Roy met and married the love of his life, Susan, at that time a flight attendant for Pan American. They traveled in Europe, Hawaii, Canada, Guatemala, Tahiti and most of the US. Camping at the coast and Sequoia Park were favorite destinations. Roy then entered real estate as a salesman, broker, and mortgage broker. He owned and managed restaurants and apartments in LA, Bakersfield and Visalia. The couple lived in Manhattan Beach, San Diego, Visalia, and Baltimore, MD, residing in Visalia for the past 37 years. Roy was an avid Dodger and LA Rams fan and followed national and world news closely. He loved learning and discussing ideas and events at length. He was quite handy, helping to build and remodel various houses. He loved his pets � dogs, rabbits, cats and cockatiels - especially his 3 beagles all named Snoopy. A loving, caring, and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and favorite uncle, he especially enjoyed his children and grandchildren during his final years and will be greatly missed. Roy leaves his wife "Susie", his children Nicholas Haynes, Laura M�vinne, Rebecca Turner and her husband Andrew, grandchildren Andy and Nora Turner and Linn�a M�vinne, sister Ruth Lindemann and husband John, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Roy is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Clifford, Kelsey, Ralph, Lawrence Haynes and Albert Cooper.
