Richard Everett Siegel

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Richard E. Siegel of Sunnyvale, California. Richard passed away at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto on June 22, 2025, at the age of 79. Richard was born on April 19, 1946, to Clara and Willis Siegel Brodahl in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the youngest of six children. He was raised and educated in Grand Forks, where a strong foundation of integrity, service, and devotion to family was instilled in him from an early age. In March of 1964, Richard answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. Following his training in San Diego, he was deployed to Vietnam in August of that year, where he served honorably for ten months. After sustaining a knee injury in the field, he was transported to a military hospital in Japan for two months of recovery before returning to San Diego. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 1970, and carried the pride of that service with him throughout his life. Before his deployment to Vietnam in 1964, Richard met the woman who would change his life. On April 13, 1967, he married Darlyne Ebertz at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Devils Lake, North Dakota. Together they made their home in California, where Richard worked at Onizuka Air Force Station while he and Darlyne also worked as apartment managers in Sunnyvale, a role that brought them into the lives of many families who came to regard them as their own. They started a family, welcoming their son Rick in September of 1968, and built a life defined by love, commitment, and warmth extended generously to all who knew them. Richard was a man of deep character, known for his joyful laugh, his ready sense of humor, and his sincere and abiding devotion to those around him. In his later years, he was rarely without his beloved Chihuahua, Lucy, who was a constant and cherished companion. Richard was preceded in death by his sisters, Jean Janes and Joanne Blair, and his brothers, Willis and Robert. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Darlyne; his son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Karen Siegel; his sister, Dolores Purvis; his grandchildren, Tyler Siegel, Molly and Taylor Webb; many cherished nieces and nephews, and his loyal Chihuahua, Lucy. Richard E. Siegel was a devoted husband, a proud United States Marine, a beloved grandfather, and a man of remarkable grace and generosity of spirit. Wherever Richard went, he made the world a little lighter and a little warmer. His influence on those he loved does not end here; it will be passed down and felt for generations to come. He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
