Lupe R. Licon

Lupe Licon (aka Chayo), age 72, peacefully passed away Monday, August 10, 2020. She was born to Margarita and Porfidio Rubi on November 16, 1947 in Los Angeles, CA. Lupe had a colorful childhood growing up in Juarez, Mexico for a short time and then traveling back to California where she met the love of her life while walking down the street with some friends. She married Pete Licon in November of 1966 and almost completed 54 years of marriage. Lupe was a tiny but mighty force of nature who enjoyed being with family and friends. She always had a beaming smile, yet was ready to do battle with anyone who spoke poorly of her family. Her grandchildren, who could never do any wrong in her eyes, loved her scrambled eggs and fideos the best, but she was most famous for her macaroni salad and salsa. Both were in high demand at many family functions. You could always tell her mood by how spicy her salsa was! Some of Lupe's earliest and fondest memories of work were of picking cotton in the fields while listening to the older folks' gossip. She later became a seamstress at Bayley's Manufacturing where she worked for twenty-five years until the factory closed down. She then became a Home Health Care worker where she made friends with the ladies she cared for. She quit her job as soon as she learned that she was going to be a grandmother. Lupe was a very devout Catholic who had tremendous faith in praying the rosary. She would often pray for anyone who asked or needed prayers. Lupe had also devoted many years volunteering as a Crusillista, Guadalupana, and the Altar Society. She took great pride in seeing a beautiful mass. As Lupe became older and Parkinson's began to slow her down, she began to enjoy the retired life with Pete. Their all-time favorite activity was going to the casinos with family and friends or traveling with the Senior Gadabouts Group to Laughlin or Reno. Lupe is survived and dearly missed by her husband, Pete Licon, her big brother Rudolfo Rubi and her baby sister, Cecelia Gonzalez and her husband David. She was preceded in death by her older sister Belen Uribes, younger sister Rosemary Escamilla, her little brother John Mendoza, and her beloved niece Terry Herrera. She has two daughters Rebecca West (Angel Ruiz) and Sylvia Glispey (Eric) and five most cherished grandchildren: Michael, Megan, Ian, Christian, and Ryker. Lupe also has a plethora of nieces and nephews whom she loved very much. Lupe was a daughter, wife, mother, aunt, godmother, and grandmother who was loved, respected, and slightly feared.
