Hollis Dunn

Hollis Eugene “Gene” Dunn was born on September 1st, 1924 and returned home to heaven on December 28th, 2014 with his family at his side. He was born in Somerset, Kentucky to Charles and Glenna Dunn, the third of four children. As a teen, he spent his days playing in his front yard and running down the street to swim in the nearby pond. As he walked up and down the street, he came to notice an attractive young girl named Emma Lou Roy. Everyday as she walked by, he would whistle at her to get her attention. On October 12th, 1946, after serving three years in the US Navy as a rear gunman aboard The USS Richmond, he married Emma. In 1948 they had their first son, Gary and in 1959 their second son, Alan. After Alan’s birth, Gene took a job in Athens, Georgia. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Visalia, California for Gene’s job. In 1960, Gene started at Bayly Corporation as a Sewing Room Superintendent and one year later he became the plant manager. He served there for many years and has many employees in the community who enjoyed working for and with him. He retired from Bayly in 1988 to become a yard-cutting, barbecuing, pool-cleaning, stained glass window-making, ice cream-eating grandpa. He loved spending time in his pool during the summer months and could often be found hanging out in a pair of swim trunks, a straw hat and some water shoes. In addition to spending time with his family by the pool, he found great joy in serving as a deacon at Woodland Drive Baptist Church and was known for his pockets full of candy! He is proceeded in death by his parents, Charles and Glenna, his brother Jack and his brother J.C. He is survived by his Wife, Emma, his sister Katherine “Nunie” Rayborn (Sam), his sons Gary Dunn (Susan) and Alan Dunn (Charlotte), his grandchildren Shane Dunn (Rachel), Brandi Jackson (Ray), Shannon Cauthen (Jared) and Kyle Dunn (Hannah) and 5 great grandchildren. A viewing will be held at Salser and Dillard in Visalia on Sunday, January 4th from 4-6:00 pm. A funeral service will be held on Monday January 5th, 2015 at 9:30am at Woodland Drive Baptist Church, 1436 S. Woodland Drive in Visalia.
