Ernesto "Ernie" Olvera, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2025, at the age of 69. Born in Weslaco, Texas, on September 25, 1955, Ernie was known for his strength, his steady presence, and his deep devotion to his family. For over 35 years, Ernie specialized in ornamental fencing-a craft he approached with pride and precision. His hands were always at work, not just building fences, but building a legacy. He was a teacher at heart, and he especially loved passing down his trade to his grandsons and sons-in-law, instilling in them a love for the craft and the value of hard work. Ernie had a true appreciation for the things he worked hard for, and one of his greatest joys was driving a nice car. He especially took pride in his newer truck, which he kept clean and cared for like a prized possession. It reflected his style-reliable, strong, and well-earned. Family was the center of Ernie's world. In his later years, he found a deep sense of peace and comfort living with one of his daughters, her husband, and their children. Surrounded by love, laughter, and rhythms of daily life, it is where he felt most comfortable and at peace. Though he kept his own house nearby, this was truly home for him-a place to rest, joke, watch TV, and simply be himself. Just as he loved being there, his family deeply cherished having him with them. His presence brought comfort, joy, and a sense of togetherness that will be deeply missed. He remained deeply connected to all his daughters, visiting them often-two of whom live out of town. Whether near or far, he made it a priority to stay involved in their lives, offering his time, his humor, and his ever-steady support. No matter where he was, Ernie made you feel like you were home when you were with him. In his younger years, Ernie played football and baseball-sports he continued to enjoy as a lifelong fan. He could always be found watching a game, often with one on the TV and another streaming on his phone. It wasn't just about the teams - it was about the love of the game, the strategy, and the excitement. He also enjoyed trying new restaurants and loved treating his family to a good meal. One of his favorite spots was in Exeter, where he'd often go for a bowl of menudo and a michelada - simple traditions that brought comfort and joy. Whether it was a favorite place or somewhere new, he found happiness in sharing food and time with the people he cared about most. On the weekends, Ernie loved hitting the golf course with the guys-including his sons-in-law. It didn't matter that he always joked about never winning; for him, it was about the laughs, the company, and enjoying the game. Golf wasn't just a hobby-it was a way he stayed connected, relaxed, and made memories with the people he loved. Ernie was known for his generosity and his heart. He had a quiet but powerful way of showing up for others. If someone needed help-whether it was a ride, a repair, a meal, or just someone to listen-he was there without hesitation. His compassion extended to everyone he met, and his kindness left a lasting impression on friends, family, and even strangers. Helping others wasn't something he talked about-it was something he just did. Ernie was the proud and devoted father of four daughters: Stephanie Alonzo (Jaime), Mary-Danielle Alvarez (Jacob), Maurissa Alvizo (Michael), and Lauren Hernandez (Paul). His daughters were his pride and joy, and he never missed a chance to express his love for them. He will be remembered for his warmth, his humor, and his signature sayings like, "Take me home, James," and "When you got it, you got it." He was preceded in death by his father (1987), his mother (2004), and his older brother John. He leaves behind his four daughters, 17 beloved grandchildren, and many extended family members and friends who were blessed to know him. His legacy lives on in every fence line he built, every lesson he passed down, every backyard game, and every quiet evening spent in laughter and love.
