Betty Louise Calhoon

Betty Louise Calhoon, age 93, passed away on September 10, 2022. She was born in Indiana as the third of five children to Willis and Retha Krock on April 7, 1929. It was there in Indiana in a revival meeting at the Nazarene church that she gave her heart and life to the Lord. When Betty was 13 her family moved to Corona, California. Following high school she received her Associates degree from Los Angeles Pacific College, and her BA degree in elementary education from Pepperdine University. She was active in education for 20 years, teaching in Los Angeles before and after getting married and when her daughters were young. On August 21, 1954, in Huntington Park California she was joined in marriage to Reverend Bev Calhoon. Together they pastored five churches in CA & AZ. Betty served in Christian education some 65 years teaching Sunday School, VBS, Kids Club, Children's Church, and Nursery. Betty was a gifted teacher with a natural connection with children of all ages. The couple had three daughters. In 1984, following the death of their oldest daughter, Ruth Ann Holcomb, her husband resigned his church in Lake Isabella and then moved to Visalia. Betty loved being a homemaker, mother, and grandmother. Betty had a heart for those around her. She was grandma to her own grandchildren and to the children in the neighborhood. For hobbies she enjoyed reading, baking, and canning. One of her creative outlets was sewing quilts, which she shared with family & friends. Her love of gardening carried her through her later years even as her level of activity lessened. Betty is preceded in death by her husband, brother, three sisters, and by her daughter Ruth Ann. She is survived by her two daughters Mary Conaway of Farmersville, and Karen Honegger and husband Allen in Colorado, 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held 11am on Saturday, October 1st, 2022 at First Presbyterian Church of Visalia, 215 N. Locust St., Visalia. Private internment will be at Bakersfield National Cemetery, 30338 E. Bear Mtn. Blvd., Arvin. Services have been entrusted to Salser & Dillard Funeral Chapel.
