Antone Machado Borges Jr.

Antone Machado Borges, Jr. better known as Tony, age 93, passed away peacefully at his home in Visalia on January 3, 2021. He was born in McKinleyville, CA. on May 12, 1927. His parents, Antone and Mary Costa-Borges, raised Tony and his two sisters, Mary Dias and Tina Terbush, in Arcata, Ca. Tony has four sons, Terry, Tim, Russ and his #4 adopted son, Tom. Tony's young life at Arcata High School was special to him, lots of stories about his basketball team and a 1936 Ford Convertible that did 119 miles per hour. The Navy recruited him in 1945 and he worked on an ammunition ship, USS Hercules. After the Navy, in 1946, he worked at the Barrel factory in Arcata and then shortly after that he went to work for Benny Feurerwerker at his furniture store. He married Janet Barlow in June of 1948 and often talked about their memorable camping vacation taken with the boys to Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. He coached his sons Terry and Tim as well as numerous kids in the Arcata Little League and Babe Ruth. Tony and Janet raised their boys on the outskirts of Arcata in a wonderful country environment on Warren Creek Road. He worked hard to build a career, starting out in 1952 as a relief driver for Cottage Grove Dairies, that company was bought out several times ending up Foremost Dairies. He eventually moved up the ranks and in 1980 was promoted to District Manager Northern Ca., based in San Francisco, CA. His district was from the Oregon border to Bakersfield, CA. He married Lynda Cunningham, helped raise their son Russell and bought a home in Benicia that he worked on constantly. He coached Russ in baseball as well as many other young men in Benicia Little League and Babe Ruth, then finishing as an umpire, which were all his favorite things to do. He was a 49er season ticket holder during the wonderful years of the 80's. He loved tailgating with family and friends. He also enjoyed his trips to the wine country and watching his son, Tim, build his wine business with his daughter-in-law, Jane. He often spoke of a memorable trip he took with his granddaughters, Kate and Jenna, to Marine World in Vallejo. He retired at age 65 and took up umpiring high school baseball, made redwood wine boxes and met up with Benicia friends for coffee every morning. In 2005 he followed his son Terry and daughter-in-law, Kathy, to Visalia, Ca. He loved to watch his grandson, Trenton, play football and baseball. He coached his granddaughters, Kristina and Kelly, in softball and worked on his new home. The biggest highlight in 2005 was the birth of his only great grandson, Vincent. In between all of that, he met up with friends for a monthly dinner and wine tasting. Over the years he's had several dogs in his life that he loved and would definitely want mentioned - Flip, Cindy, Jasmine, Ben and Beejay.
