Myrtle Marian Nunes

On December 4th, our loving mother Myrtle went to join our dad in heaven. Myrtle Nunes was born on January 12, 1930 to Frank and Rose Leal in Artesia, California. She was the 9th of 14 children. The family moved from Artesia to Woodville, Ca in her early years where she helped on the family dairy. While attending local Portuguese ceremonies she met her future husband Louie Nunes. They were married in Tulare on January 4, 1951. Mom and Dad were married for 23 years until his untimely death in 1974. Mom raised 3 sons and 3 daughters while residing in Tulare. Mom really enjoyed raising her family, but she also received a lot of satisfaction from working in the retail market. She worked for stores such as Sears, JC Penny, K-Mart and fabric stores. She also owned the Montgomery Ward Catalogue Store in Tulare. Mom was an amazing seamstress, sewing many of her daughter’s clothes for school and formals for school dances. She also made pageant and Portuguese celebration dresses and beautiful capes for queens of Portuguese celebrations. For fun she loved playing cards with her family for money (had to involve money). She loved bingo, going to Dodger games and last but not least spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mom is preceded in death by her husband Louie Nunes, her parents Frank & Rose Leal, 5 brothers and 2 sisters. She is survived by 3 daughters: Marian Barrier, Alice (Mark) Richmond of Visalia, Rose Mary (Leonard) Maciel of Tulare; 3 sons Louie (Rosalie) Nunes, Frank (Danielle) Nunes of Grover Beach and Joaquin (Pam ) Nunes of Hanford; she has 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. A visitation will take place on Tuesday, December 9 from 5pm to 7pm at Salser and Dillard Funeral Chapel 127 E. Caldwell Ave. Visalia, CA 93277. Recitation of rosary and mass of the resurrection will be on Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at 9:30AM at St. Rita’s Catholic Church, 954 South “O” Street, Tulare, CA. Burial to follow at Tulare Cemetery on Kern Ave. Arrangements trusted to Salser and Dillard Funeral Home.
